A gasp of air escaped the lips of the man below Tobias - he could hear it even through the dark visor across the mans face - and his head hit the floor violently as the shield connected with the front of his face. The shield was promptly brought up in Toby's hand as he lunged forward, body launching straight through the doorway and into the hall. Behind him, a tremendous hissing sound issues from the grenade as a white gas started spewing out of it.

His body flew into the darkened hallway, the shield flinging around his body in an instant, catching the first few bullets that came flying in Tobias' direction. Down the hall to one direction were at least three other armoured soldiers, the shield now between their SMGs and Tobias. Behind them, a stairwell descended to the cargo bay, on which at least two other troops were standing by.

Down the opposite end of the hall were two other men, handguns pointed at Tobias, grey suits simply out of place. one was the blonde man Toby had glimpsed before, the other a similarly dressed black haired man. Both were quite tall and slim, duplicate handguns to match the looks of horror on their faces.

They both fired at once.

Toby felt the impact - once in his side, again in his left thigh.

As soon as he flew into the hall, he knew he was on his way out. A few shots rang off the front of his shield. A grin spread over his face, until he looked back; the smile practically fell off his face.

The two shots slammed into him, but no sound came. He dropped to a knee, the bottom of the shield slamming against the deck, the only line between his body and the rest of the soldiers. The two behind him, however, had truly earned his ire.

Fury boiled in him. Aside from the vastly stupid mistake of lunging into the corridor, he was now hit. He had no idea how bad, he just felt pain rocket up his side and his leg, but another feeling overwhelmed him. Sheer, unbridled anger, that crashed over his mind in waves, swallowing the pain whole.

He didn't have time for a hesitant thought to pass his mind, and that was fine by him - he had stopped consciously thinking. Something flicked off in his mind, and base reactions became his only sensory output.

Flicking around in the blink of an eye, Tobias' massive metal cannon leveled with the two men at the far end of the hall. Kneeling behind a shield, torso twisted back with arm stretched out far to line his shot up, a deathly grimace of gritted teeth and rage on his worn features, it was like a portrait of some long-forgotten battle in war. Something in the back corner of an old art gallery, revered for its brush strokes and attention to detail; capturing the most singular moment in a battle, perhaps a turning point carried on the back of one determined soul, or the last, vicious struggle of a dying soldier, fighting valiantly to the end for a cause no one knew.

It would be neither, if Tobias had his way. Adrenalin rushed his body, endorphins flooding his senses from the sheer pain; he wasn't sure if it was the pain, the anger, or something he didn't remember that sharpened his focus, but the two men in gray suits stood out like beacons to his eyes.

All in an instant, his arm had flicked around, the hammer drawn back, and in a blinding flash, two shots rang out - though it sounded as one.

In that brief moment, just before the hammer struck the bullet casing, an internal battle had been fought and won.

The battle? Whether to aim for their heads or their guns.

The guns won. Lucky them.

His gun fired faster than the gunslinger thought it could, twin bullets slamming into their targets with pinpoint accuracy. Screaming issued from the two men down the hall as they clasped at their hands, guns flying up into the air and then crashing down to the floor.

The gunslinger noted the targets down and then twisted back around to face the oncoming soldiers - the two tall suited men were taken care of, at least for the time being. As he turned, the dark hall burred with the speed at which he moved. Panic spread through him as he realised that he was no longer holding the shield. Everything was moving too fast.

Too fast.

"What the hell?!" The scream came from Kiara as bullets pinged off the metal wall behind them. The pair were pinned down with fire from more directions than Tobias could count, wind blowing furiously from the large expanse before them.

The two were at the huge blast doors of some complex, the towering building to their rear and the huge, open doors gaping at their backs. The cover that had saved Tobias from the last volley - that, and the way Kiara had tackled him to the ground - appeared to be some kind of military vehicle. A tank of some kind, small and bulky and shiny new.

The gunfire was coming from beyond the 'front gate', towards the orange landscape beyond. Before he was thrust to the ground, the pain in his side gone, Tobias caught sight of a large expanse before them - barren desert, as far as he could see, with a scattering of military grade vehicles circled around him and his young companion.

There was dozen of guns out there.

"Go hwong tong! What the is going on?!" Kiara had rolled off Tobias and sat up, back to the tank as bullets pinged all around them, her eyes watery and filled with genuine fear.

Immediately sitting bolt upright, Tobias grabbed the body on him and pressed it against the cover, flattening his back against the metal, panting for breath.

"AAGGH." He bellowed suddenly, short and sweet, drawing his pistol. As soon as he had sat up, panic had begun to rise in him, but that little outburst seemed to be just enough to get him moving.

"****!" Clearly one more didn't hurt. He screamed a vulgar expletive, his arm flicking, eyes darting to check his weapon was loaded, before he slipped it around the corner of the tank, firing off a single shot without looking. His hand felt directed, but it was a wild shot - he had no intent of hitting someone.

"Kiara!?" He turned, staring at the woman, out of breath for what seemed as no reason. His free hand patted about his side, where a wound should have been, but he lacked one.

"I'm fading in and out! I think I'm losing it!" Slipping his weapon around the corner again, he took another shot, gaze snapping to his arm as it felt so sure of the shot it was making, but he knew in his mind it couldn't hit. Not at this distance, not blind. For a man self-proclaiming that he's 'losing it', he seemed to have gotten back in the saddle quickly, eyes scanning the surroundings for cover and enemies, before flicking back to the tank at their backs.

"Every time I black out I wake up somewhere else! Don't ask why, I don't have a friggin' clue! I remember the hallway, then up until a second ago I was under fire on a ship, and now I'm back here!" Flipping his body around, Tobias stared up at the metal behemoth before him.

Turning, he threw a hand out and grabbed Kiara by the shoulder.

"DON'T freak out on me! I'm still here, and I know we're in deep shit!" He yelled over the gunfire, staring down at the frightened girl - the girl he reminded himself had broken her way out of her own captivity and killed several people.

"I NEED to know! Can you drive this thing!?" He pointed his gun up at the tank, wide eyed, frantically searching her features for an immediate answer. Everything about him was frantic, rapid, processing reams of data in seconds, an entire situation he had just been introduced to, yet none of it felt 'new'. Deep down, he felt he had been in worse...

But never two situations at once...

"Drive WHAT?!" Kiara was huddled low, back to the tank and hands held before her bowed head, shaking. Bullets whizzed by, hitting the dusty floor around them, and yelling echoed all around from those targeting the pair. Tobias was having trouble thinking, remembering.

Clearly they'd just left the complex, the huge structure to their rear, which seemed half buried in the sands. There were other vehicles strewn about, too, most with attackers hiding behind them and firing blindingly towards Toby and Kiara. The tank, from what he could see, was the only cover nearby.

The large vehicle was flat against the ground, with access to its underside only via the front and back - the thick treads blocked any access from where the two were pinned down. However, if luck was with them, it was likely the vehicle would have some kind of underside access point, for emergencies.

"I can't remember a thing. I can't..." It was only now that Tobias saw she was wounded, likely a bullet hole in her side. Her shotgun was laying in the dirt beside them, barrel smoking as if it'd just been thrown down, and her handgun had fallen down between her feet where it lay empty.

"STOW IT! We've got BIGGER problems than amnesiacs!" He roared as he leaned down and grabbed the woman by her wrist. "But they don't..." He growled. He would have smirked, but irritation briefly overwhelmed him. Apparently, if it was one thing he couldn't stand, it was people folding under pressure. Perhaps his expectations were set a little high, but it didn't matter.

"Put some salt on it and GET UP." Pulling upward, Tobias dragged Kiara to her feet with little patience. Slipping his weapon around the corner, he fired off another shot, realising that he should be down to only three rounds in the chamber.

"The tank is our only way out!" Putting her arm around his shoulder wouldn't work. With his free limb, Tobias grabbed the fearful woman gently by the chin, forcing her face to look toward his as he stared close.

"Man up! Pressure on the wound, and we can get through this alive! You only die when I gorram let you! Not before!" He paced his words, a little more reassurance creeping into his tone. With his other hand, he flicked his gun, splitting it in two, and three shells popped free. He reached into his pocket and, like lightning, stuffed three rounds into the gun just as the empty shells hit the ground, one still smouldering.

"Grab your shotgun!" Snapping it shut, he slung one arm under the injured woman's.

"We're going under the tank; there should be a way inside!" I think...

Supporting her, admittedly with little trouble, Tobias readied himself to pop around the end of the tank with the least enemy fire, and essentially throw Kiara under the vehicle. He could drop down and slide in backward, and provide cover fire after he was sure she was under, and safe.

Tobias held a bewildering confidence in the arm wielding his hand-cannon. He knew the mantra; six shots, six kills.

He just prayed there were six or less men on the side he chose to pop out from... Any more, and there'd be trouble.

"READY?!" He boomed, huffing air hurriedly to fill his lungs with oxygen as he looked back to his wounded partner in crime.

It took a loud explosion on the other side of the tank - that Toby hoped and assumed was a grenade, as opposed to a missile - to bring Kiara back to life. She was still shaken, but started to nod profusely at Tobias as if everything he'd said was suddenly hitting her all at once. Her hands danced around in the sand until she clasped the shotgun, reaching into a pouch on her belt and loading the weapon with numerous more shells that she produced from it.

"Under the tank. Under the tank. Under the tank." It was almost a whisper, but Toby could still hear her. Every time she uttered the word 'tank', the young girls voice rose just a little, as if reminding herself of just how far fetched the whole situation was. She was as lost as Tobias.

Glancing underneath the vehicle from behind the tracks, Toby could see what he already knew was there - a hatch. Closed, but unlikely locked. He hoped, anyway. The dash would expose them, though, for a three or four seconds.

Three or four seconds too long, most likely. But what other option did they have?

Wait here and watch Kiara bleed out, or move and risk being shot.

Only one of those options had a chance for a longer life, and a new hole in the body or not, Tobias was not deterred. He would take a hit if it meant getting out. He had to. They both had to.

Steeling himself for impact, Tobias pulled the hammer on his hand cannon back with a thumb, heaving Kiara up.

"You dive right under, I'll cover!" He shouted, shuffling toward the side.

"GO!" Without a second thought, Tobias stepped out, bringing his weapon to bear before him.

It was like a shooting gallery - except one where you'd just had a blindfold removed before firing. He had no idea of positions, or cover, or weapon, or numbers. He was firing blind. So long as he could get under the tank, it didn't matter.

He had six shots.

All but one were fired in the blink of an eye.

His own went wide. He hadn't even recognized a single target. He hadn't laid eyes on a figure yet. His conscious mind hadn't even registered that he had fully stepped out from behind the vehicle. But his arm, his body, they moved with precision, with intent, with skill he just couldn't comprehend.... Yet.

"GO GO GO!"

Everything seemed to move in fast forward as Tobias made his move, a blur of sand flying up from the impact of bullets and the rush of wind as he dived around the side of the tank, gunning as he went.

There were no confirmed hits, nor kills. No number of enemies. No intel whatsoever. Everything was just moving too fast. As Toby hit the dirt under the tank, a soft thud beside him indicating Kiara had made the same journey, all he could confirm was that he wasn't hurt.

Above the pair was a circular metal plate that, supposedly, would lead them into the vehicles hull.

They were under.

Somehow, they were under.

Immediately, Tobias' free hand slammed the ground, allowing him to roll onto his back, lashing out at the metal plate that sat between he and Kiara.

"Pressure on the wound!" He bellowed at her as he pulled at the plate, scouring the edge of it for a latch.

It was time to get the hell out of there. Patch up the woman and, if time allowed, level as much of the facility as possible as they left.

This place could go to hell for all he cared.

The latch snapped open revealing the darkness of the tanks interior. Without missing a beat Tobias was inside the bulky piece of machinery, pulling the young girl up behind him. Interior lights were limited, the dull glow of auxiliary lights lighting the dark corners of the vehicle.

Everything went quiet as the hatch was pulled shut behind them, the thick plating taking not only the impact of the bullets, but all sound they carried with them. The only sound was the heavy breathing from Kiara as she slumped down beside Toby, one hand grasping at her stomach as the shotgun in her hand, smoking again - she'd taken a shot somewhere in the dash - fell to the metal flooring.

Hidden by her hand, three small bullet holes had bore their way into her stomach.

Time seemed to lose meaning as Tobias stumbled through the dimly lit cargo bay of the Horizon. The memory of Kiara, the inside of the tank, was all still fresh in his mind. What had happened on board the Horizon was unknown to him still, though the fight was over.

He'd won.

Bodies littered the entire ship, a loud announcement echoing through the halls, informing the gunslinger that the Horizon was about to be boarded. Again.

He knew the shuttles attached would be easy to track, perhaps with more fuel than an escape pod but easier to track nonetheless. Thus, with his weapon in hand and bags slung over a shoulder, Tobias made his way through the empty ship, towards the small escape pods near the bridge.

As he moved, the hull was breached from outside, a new boarding party making themselves known. He didn't have time for this, firing blind shots off towards those who were letting themselves onto the wrecked ship. He didn't care who they were. IT was time to leave.

The small pod, with just enough room for his bags at his feet, launched Tobias off into space, The Black closing in around him as the small metal coffin fired itself off towards Verbena.
